Insanity

A legal defense in criminal cases asserting that a defendant lacked the mental capacity to understand the nature of their actions or to distinguish right from wrong at the time of the offense. This defense is distinct from a medical diagnosis of mental illness. The M'Naghten Rules are a common standard used to determine legal insanity in many jurisdictions.
