Irresistible impulse test

A legal standard for the insanity defense, asserting that a defendant is not criminally responsible if a mental disease or defect prevented them from controlling their conduct, even if they knew the act was wrong. This test focuses on the defendant's volitional capacity rather than their cognitive understanding. It is a supplement or alternative to the M'Naghten rule in some jurisdictions.
