Institutional investor

An organization that trades securities in large quantities or holds substantial assets in its portfolio, rather than an individual investor. These entities include pension funds, mutual funds, insurance companies, commercial banks, and university endowments. Because of their size, institutional investors can exert influence on corporate governance and are subject to specific regulatory requirements under securities laws, such as those administered by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
