International humanitarian law

A body of public international law that seeks to protect persons who are not, or are no longer, participating in hostilities and to restrict the means and methods of warfare. Its rules are found in treaties, such as the Geneva Conventions, and in customary international law. This legal framework applies only in situations of armed conflict.
