Island Trees School District v. Pico (1982)
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002792
A 1982 Supreme Court decision on a school board's removal of books from a school library. A plurality of four justices concluded that officials cannot remove books simply because they dislike the ideas in them, since that would deny students access to ideas in violation of the First Amendment. The Court did not decide the case outright but returned it for trial on the board's actual motives.
