United States district courts

The general trial courts of the federal judicial system, hearing both civil and criminal cases. There are 94 federal judicial districts, with at least one in each state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. These courts are where federal cases are initially filed, evidence is presented, and decisions are made by judges or juries.
