Gerrymander

To manipulate the boundaries of an electoral constituency so as to favor one party or class. This practice involves drawing district lines in unusual shapes to concentrate opposition voters into a few districts or to spread them thinly across many districts. The term originated in 1812, combining the name of Governor Elbridge Gerry with the shape of a salamander-like district.
