Legal Services Corporation

An independent nonprofit corporation created by Congress through the Legal Services Corporation Act of 1974 to fund civil legal aid for low-income Americans. It does not represent clients itself but distributes federal appropriations as grants to roughly 130 independent legal aid programs covering every state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. Congress funded it at about $560 million in fiscal years 2024 and 2025.
