A person's biological children, grandchildren, and other direct descendants who are recognized as legitimate under the law. The term is frequently used in wills, trusts, and estate planning to define the class of beneficiaries entitled to inherit property. Historically, the concept was used to exclude children born outside of marriage, but modern statutes in most jurisdictions now grant equal inheritance rights to all children, regardless of their parents' marital status.
