Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005373

Conforming to the law, rules, or recognized principles, thereby being considered lawful, authentic, and proper. An action, claim, or status is legitimate if it is sanctioned by legal authority and not in violation of any statute or established precedent. For instance, a child born to married parents is historically considered a legitimate heir with full inheritance rights, although modern statutes have largely removed the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate children regarding succession.
