Legal separation

A court-ordered arrangement that allows a married couple to live apart and manage their finances separately without formally ending their marriage. This status provides for the division of assets, child custody, and support payments, similar to a divorce. Unlike divorce, it does not dissolve the marital bond, preventing either party from remarrying.
