Martial law

The temporary imposition of military rule over a civilian population, usually during an emergency, war, or rebellion. It involves the suspension of ordinary law and the exercise of government and judicial functions by the military. This measure is invoked under extreme circumstances and is subject to constitutional limitations in many countries.
