War and defense powers

The constitutional authority granted to the federal government, primarily Congress and the President, to provide for the nation's defense and engage in military conflict. These powers include declaring war, raising and supporting armies, providing and maintaining a navy, and regulating the land and naval forces. Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution enumerates many of these powers for Congress.
