Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act

A 2009 federal statute that broadened the scope of U.S. hate crime legislation. It allows for federal prosecution of violent crimes committed because of the victim's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. This act also eliminated the prerequisite that the victim had to be participating in a federally protected activity for the crime to be prosecuted at the federal level.
