Hate crime

A criminal offense motivated by bias against a particular group, typically based on race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or gender identity. The underlying criminal act, such as assault or vandalism, is aggravated by the perpetrator's discriminatory intent. Federal and state laws provide enhanced penalties for offenses classified as hate crimes.
