Entities formed to pursue a collective, public, or social mission rather than to generate profit for owners or shareholders. Any revenue generated beyond operating expenses must be reinvested into the organization's mission. In the United States, many such entities seek tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, which applies to charitable, religious, and educational organizations.
