Oath

A solemn declaration, often invoking a divine being or sacred object, affirming the truth of a statement or promising to fulfill a duty. It binds the person making it to speak truthfully or act faithfully under penalty of perjury or divine retribution. Witnesses in court proceedings are required to take an oath or affirmation before giving testimony.
