Parens patriae

The inherent power and authority of the state to protect those who cannot protect themselves, such as children, the mentally ill, or the elderly. This doctrine allows the government to act as a legal parent or guardian for individuals who are unable to care for their own interests. It is frequently invoked in child welfare cases and guardianship proceedings.
