Child custody

A legal determination of which parent or guardian has the right and responsibility to care for and make decisions about a minor child. Courts distinguish between physical custody, concerning where the child lives, and legal custody, concerning the authority to make decisions about the child's upbringing, such as education and healthcare. The governing standard for all custody decisions is the 'best interests of the child', which varies by state jurisdiction.
