  1. The legal and practical control and responsibility for a person or thing, such as property held by a bailee or a person under arrest. In family law, it specifically concerns the right to make decisions about a child's upbringing (legal custody) and the physical care and supervision of the child (physical custody). Courts determine custody arrangements based on the "best interests of the child" standard, considering factors like parental fitness, the child's well-being, and the child's preference if of sufficient age and maturity.

  2. (of a child) The legal right and responsibility to care for a child, encompassing decisions about their upbringing, education, and healthcare. It determines where a child lives and who makes choices on their behalf. Custody orders are established by family courts and can be sole or joint, physical or legal.
