Describing a security interest that has been made effective against third parties, thereby establishing the creditor's priority claim to the collateral. This status is achieved by taking specific legal steps, such as filing a financing statement with a public office or taking possession of the collateral. A perfected security interest generally takes precedence over unperfected interests.
