Posse comitatus

The power of a sheriff or other law enforcement officer to summon the assistance of able-bodied adult citizens to preserve the peace, make arrests, or execute legal process. In the United States, the Posse Comitatus Act generally prohibits the use of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement purposes, with certain exceptions.
