Quo warranto

A legal proceeding challenging an individual's right to hold a public office or corporate franchise. The Latin phrase means "by what warrant or authority." This action seeks to determine by what lawful authority a person exercises a power or holds an office, and if no such authority exists, to remove them. It is a prerogative writ, historically issued by a sovereign.
