The legal duty to create and keep records documenting a regulated activity, so that authorities can verify compliance. In internet law the best-known example is federal law at 18 USC 2257, which requires producers of sexually explicit visual material, including material published online, to check each performer's age against identification and retain the records. A violation is a federal crime punishable by up to five years in prison.
