Rent control

A system of government regulations that limits the amount a landlord can charge for rent and specifies the conditions under which rent can be increased. These laws are intended to maintain affordable housing, particularly in high-cost urban areas. Jurisdictions with rent control establish boards or agencies, such as the New York City Rent Guidelines Board, to set the allowable annual percentage increases.
