Rent withholding

A tenant's refusal to pay rent to a landlord due to the landlord's failure to maintain the property in a habitable condition or to make necessary repairs. This action is generally permissible only if the landlord has been notified of the defect and failed to remedy it within a reasonable time. Many jurisdictions have specific laws governing rent withholding.
