A formal application made to a court or another party for some order, action, or information. In civil litigation, a 'request for admission' asks the opposing party to admit or deny certain facts, while a 'request for production' demands documents or other tangible things. These procedural tools are governed by rules of civil procedure, such as the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in U.S. federal courts.
