An official permission or approval for an action, or a penalty imposed for disobeying a law or rule. In international law, sanctions are often economic or diplomatic measures taken by one or more states against another state to compel a change in policy. Domestic legal systems impose sanctions such as fines, imprisonment, or loss of privileges for violations of statutes or court orders.
A penalty or other type of enforcement used to bring about compliance with the law or with rules and regulations.
