Show cause order

A court order directing a party to appear before the court and present reasons why a certain action should not be taken or why a requested relief should not be granted. The burden is on the recipient of the order to demonstrate why the proposed action is inappropriate. These orders are frequently used in contempt proceedings, injunction requests, or to explain non-compliance with prior court directives.
