Shotgun charge

A jury instruction that strongly encourages jurors in a deadlocked panel to reconsider their positions and reach a unanimous verdict. Also known as an Allen charge, it asks minority-view jurors to re-examine their opinions in light of the majority's stance, without surrendering their own convictions. The use of this instruction is restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions due to its potentially coercive effect on jurors.
