Compromise verdict

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005321

A jury verdict that results from jurors making concessions on their individual beliefs about the evidence or the law to reach a unanimous decision, rather than a verdict based solely on the evidence presented. This can occur when jurors are deadlocked and agree to a lesser charge or a reduced penalty as a middle ground. While not always explicitly prohibited, a true compromise verdict based on a disregard of the evidence is generally disfavored.
