SLAPP suit

A Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, filed to silence or intimidate critics by burdening them with the cost and inconvenience of a legal defense. These lawsuits often lack substantive legal merit and are brought to deter individuals from exercising their First Amendment rights, such as free speech or petitioning the government. Many jurisdictions have anti-SLAPP statutes to protect defendants.
