Surveillance pricing
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004804
The practice of using personal data about individual consumers, such as location, browsing history, device type and past purchases, to set or adjust the price each person is shown. Pricing algorithms infer what a given buyer is willing to pay, so two shoppers see different prices for the same item at the same time. The Federal Trade Commission opened a study of the practice in 2024 and released preliminary findings in January 2025.
