Takeover

The acquisition of control of one company by another, either through the purchase of a majority of its shares or through a merger. This can be a friendly acquisition, where the target company's board agrees to the deal, or a hostile takeover, where the acquiring company attempts to gain control against the wishes of the target's management. Takeovers are subject to securities regulations and antitrust laws.
