Tax withholding

The process by which employers deduct income tax directly from an employee's paycheck and remit it to the government on the employee's behalf. The amount withheld is based on the employee's earnings and information provided on their Form W-4. These payments are credited against the employee's total annual tax liability when they file their income tax return.
