Transfer in contemplation of death

A gift or transfer of property made by an individual shortly before their death, without adequate consideration, and with the expectation of imminent demise. Such transfers may be subject to estate taxes or challenged by heirs if they appear to circumvent inheritance laws. The intent of the donor at the time of the transfer is a key factor in its legal classification.
