Useful products doctrine
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005115
A legal principle in product liability law holding that a manufacturer or seller of a raw material or component part is not liable for injuries caused by a finished product if the component itself is not defective. Liability does not attach if the material is safe for a multitude of uses and the end-product manufacturer is the one who incorporates it into a dangerous design. This doctrine protects suppliers of basic commodities like sand, gravel, or steel from liability when a third party uses those materials to create a hazardous final product.
