Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act

A United States federal law, commonly known as CERCLA or Superfund, enacted in 1980 to address the cleanup of hazardous waste sites. It established a trust fund to pay for cleanups when no responsible party could be identified and created a framework for holding polluters liable. This act grants the Environmental Protection Agency broad powers to respond to releases of hazardous substances.
