Wrongful death statute

A law enacted by a state legislature that permits the survivors or estate of a deceased person to file a civil lawsuit against the party responsible for the death. These statutes define who can sue, the types of damages recoverable, and the time limits for bringing such an action. All U.S. states have such laws.
