Aestivation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003352

A state of animal dormancy, similar to hibernation, that is a response to conditions of high temperature and drought rather than cold. It involves a period of inactivity and a reduced metabolic rate to conserve water and energy during hot, dry seasons. This survival strategy is observed in many ectothermic animals like lungfish and amphibians, as well as some insects and snails in arid or tropical climates.
