Air pocket
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010354
A colloquial expression for a localized downdraft or a region of descending air that causes an aircraft to experience a sudden, brief drop in altitude. These are not actual pockets devoid of air but are areas of turbulence or downward vertical motion, such as clear-air turbulence or microbursts. The sensation of falling is created when the aircraft encounters a column of air moving downward faster than the aircraft's own descent rate.
