Patchy turbulence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007820

A characteristic of atmospheric turbulence where regions of turbulent flow are interspersed with areas of relatively smooth, laminar flow, rather than being uniformly distributed. This phenomenon is common in the free atmosphere, particularly in clear-air turbulence, where shear layers or convective cells create localized zones of chaotic motion. It poses challenges for aircraft, as encounters can be sudden and unpredictable.
