Alternate airport

An airport designated in a flight plan where an aircraft may proceed if it becomes inadvisable to land at the intended destination. The selection of an alternate is required for certain flights and depends on the forecast weather conditions at the destination and the availability of suitable diversion options. U.S. Federal Aviation Administration regulations require that for a specified time window, the forecast weather at the alternate must meet or exceed specific minimums based on the available instrument approach procedures.
