Atmospheric ducting
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003669
The propagation of electromagnetic waves or sound waves within a confined atmospheric layer, where changes in refractive index or sound speed cause the waves to be bent back towards the Earth's surface. This phenomenon allows signals to travel much farther than under normal atmospheric conditions. It is often associated with temperature inversions or strong humidity gradients.
