Modified refractivity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007360
A quantity derived from the atmospheric refractive index that incorporates the Earth's curvature, allowing for the analysis of radio wave propagation as if it were occurring in a flat Earth environment. It is calculated by adding a term proportional to height to the standard refractivity. This concept is particularly relevant for understanding phenomena like ducting, where radio waves are trapped and propagate over long distances.
