Modon

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007361

A localized, coherent, and self-propagating vortex structure found in rotating fluids, such as planetary atmospheres or oceans. These structures consist of a dipole pair of counter-rotating vortices that move together without dispersing. Modons are a type of solitary wave solution to certain nonlinear fluid dynamics equations, such as those describing barotropic flow on a beta-plane.
