Soliton

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009045

A self-reinforcing solitary wave that maintains its shape and speed as it propagates, even after interacting with other solitons. These waves are solutions to certain nonlinear partial differential equations. In the atmosphere, they can manifest as long-lived, coherent disturbances, such as atmospheric bores or undular jumps in stable layers.
