Envelope soliton

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005393

A solitary wave pulse that propagates without changing its shape, consisting of a localized envelope that modulates a higher-frequency carrier wave. The stability of the envelope soliton arises from a balance between nonlinear effects that focus wave energy and dispersive effects that spread it. In atmospheric science, these wave structures are used to model the long-distance propagation of certain nonlinear wave packets, such as internal gravity waves or Rossby wave packets, through the atmosphere.
