Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005394

The aggregate of all external conditions and influences affecting the development and behavior of a particular atmospheric phenomenon or system. This includes the surrounding air temperature, humidity, wind shear, and pressure, which dictate how a weather system will evolve. For instance, the environmental lapse rate determines the stability of the atmosphere for convection.
