Entrainment

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005389

The process by which air from the surrounding environment is drawn into and mixed with the air within a cloud, turbulent plume, or other defined atmospheric flow. This mixing alters the properties of the flow, such as its temperature, humidity, and momentum. In convective clouds, entrainment of drier environmental air can reduce buoyancy and inhibit vertical development.
